4.3 Brackets
Round brackets
Will be used:
•For identifiers (for example, an acronym).
•For an explanation or translation inserted by the editor/ author within the text.
•If the bracket occurs at the end of a sentence, the full stop will be placed outside the bracket.
○Examples
>VidyaVanam is entirely free for Adivasis (who make up over half the student body) and Dalits. The rest pay Rs.200 a month.
>The students just call her paati (grandmother). A sign on the wall of her house in the campus says simply: paativeedu (grandma’s house).
Square brackets
Use them:
•Around a portion of a direct quotation that was reworded or paraphrased by the editor/author.
•When identifiers/explanation/translation are being used by the author/editor within a quote.
•When a bracket is being used within a bracket.
Note: if the square bracket occurs at the end of a sentence, the full stop is placed outside the bracket.
○Examples
>“We had taken a vow. Any kind of cooperation with the war [World War II], in money or in person, was a betrayal.
>"There were around 100 Kulta [cultivator caste] families. About 80 Odiya [also cultivators].”
